Be Better With Bowen
Postural Alignment Services - the Egoscue Method |
Finally I have had the time to develop a system of working with my dear friends who live in remote and outback Australia, or even live overseas. My partnership with the Egoscue Institute means that time differences and geographical location are no longer an issue. No matter where you are, or what time you have available, I can design an exercise program for you that won't take up too much of your time and may reduce your chronic pain and increase functional mobility, leaving you free to live a happier and healthier life.
We can modify our communication so that the session can be Personal Therapy, Digital Therapy or Photo Therapy:

You are designed to move in a functional manner with good posture. Whilst you will always have slight asymmetry because you are right or left handed, the body is designed to be symmetrical. Being balanced right to left and front to back, we can move with the greatest of ease because that is the position where the muscles work the most efficiently. When you are not even and balanced, your muscles have to work with what they've got, and they're not as efficient. Some have to pull tighter to do their job right, some go to sleep because they're not being worked, and some stop lengthening because they haven't been asked to do that for a long time. All this means that you are using more energy for movement, bones are being pulled unevenly, and this results in increased fatigue, stiffness and pain and the greater likelihood of injury or damage to joints. Your posture is how you hold your body innately, without thinking about it. You know that good posture results in less pain. When you say "I should change my posture" you can improve your body position by conscious effort, which is great, but that doesn't change your posture because when you get tired or distracted what do you do? Go back to your poor posture. Changing your posture can only be done by changing the length and tension of your muscles (or the flexibility or changeability of the muscles and the fascia which surrounds them) so that they naturally and effortlessly hold you in the correct position. It requires the muscles in the whole body to change, not just the ones that are short, stiff or sore. Bowen Therapy does this very effectively, with no effort on your part, which is why I love working with Bowen so much. The Egoscue's Postural Alignment E-cises also do this effectively, with some commitment and effort on your part. The Egoscue E-cises are gentle, effortless exercises that retrain muscles to provide more stability in load bearing joints, improving posture. This has the result of reducing chronic pain, and can also prevent chronic pain. The E-cises should not hurt - pushing through pain is not the goal at all. I firmly believe that if it hurts you are re-injuring yourself, and I love Bowen and these E-cises because the do not cause re-injury during rehabilation. |

"Who would have thought that those little exercises would make a difference, but they have! My knee pain is gone!!" JS, 32yo, Dubbo * * * "I would not have been able to cope with being cooped up inside with these teenagers if it were not for the e-cises. They have reduced my chronic all-over body pain so I can be the parent my kids need me to be in this time of social isolation." SB, 38yo, Dubbo * * * "The Postural Alignment e-cises have allowed me to live a normal and active life. Having sustained permanent knee damage in a car accident over 30 years ago, I can get to the top of Mount Coolum to enjoy the view with my sons, and get on a 16.2hh horse easily without a mounting block. The e-cises are my Go To when I start getting stiff and sore, and they always deliver, without fail." PD, 53yo, Dubbo * * * "Those exercises that you posted on Facebook yesterday, I did them in my chair, sitting at my computer, every hour as you posted them, and they worked! I was way more comfortable all day, and more focused and productive. After work I was much more alert and able to fully appreciate and enjoy my family. Thanks so much for sharing." The Postural Alignment Process
The Postural Alignment Process involves assessment and education, so that you can understand maybe why you have the pain. A Menu of E-cises is developed which is tailored to your body to help improve your posture and functional mobility, and you may be coached in how to do these E-cises effectively. All of this can be done in the clinic or in your own home over a Zoom meeting. If you don't have any technology we can get around that too. The Egoscue Method has been delivering Digital Therapy for 30 years, so has mastered all the most effective delivery technologies throughout that time, from snail mail to Zoom meetings.
The next step is up to you. The E-cise Menu, no matter how good it is, won't help your pain if you don't do them. But you won't be alone. An App is available, on which you will find your E-cise Menu. You may refer to instructions both on video and written, and it will run through the Menu with you. All you have to do is find the time, and mostly that is only 20 minutes a day.
You know that exercise is good for you. In the past we have been advised to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. In recent years the recommendation has doubled to 60 minutes a day, 5 days a week, because the 30 minutes a day wasn't working (their rationale was that it wasn't decreasing the number of people with chronic pain and illness so it mustn't be enough). Here's a secret. No matter how much we exercise, it is never going to be effective (enough) because ... it is not functional movement! What most of us have been doing is religiously following instructions and exercising 30 or 60 minutes a day with dysfunctional bodies. That exercise is strengthening compensations, which in turn are further entrenching our dysfunctions. Imagine how much stronger your dysfunctions will be now that you're doing 60 minutes of dysfunctional exercise ... if your body can cope with it!
(I'm pretty passionate about the need for functional movement to have optimal health, and I'll put a link here to another page or a video when I have it completed.)
Wouldn't it be better to invest in 20-30 minutes of E-cises per day for a while so you can go back to running, or the gym or whatever you do, with a body that is going to move in a functional manner, with ease and grace? That means that it will be easier for you, and you'll be breathing better so your stamina and endurance will have increased. You'll still get the kick of endorphins that you got with your dysfunctional body, only more so. It won't be causing you any unnecessary pain or injury. You will be exercising with ease, which will allow you to enjoy it even more.

Postural Alignment E-cise Effectiveness
How quickly your body will respond to the E-cises, depends upon three factors. The first is how effective the E-cises are for your body. Having me watch you in person or online do the E-cises gives me the ability to adjust the them to suit your body's requirements and capabilities. That is going to make the E-cises as effective as I can make them for you, and therefore the process will be more likely to succeed and your recovery will be quicker. Later, if you find that an E-cise is not demanding enough or causing you problems, I will be happy to consider substituting E-cises so that your improvement doesn't have to halt until we see each other again. Of course, if you opt for Photo Therapy, I will not be able to coach you in the subtleties of making the E-cises really effective for you.
The second factor is about your commitment to the process. People generally have three phases of treatment, made up of a) four to eight weekly corrective sessions before moving to b) fortnightly or monthly stabilising sessions and then revisiting c) quarterly or six monthly for maintenance sessions. During the corrective phase of your recovery (the weekly treatments) you will be doing the E-cises daily for them to be effective. At the start of the stabilising phase you will likely continue the daily routine for a while and as you become used to (and take for granted) your more comfortable state you will gradually reduce the practice to perhaps three times a week. During the maintenance phase you may gradually reduce down to twice a week or even forget to do them at all, and only remember when your body reminds you with a little niggle. Over time you will get to know the warning signs and pick the E-cises up again. But the whole process takes a long time, with daily E-cises being a very large commitment. The financial commitment pales in comparison to the personal commitment you will need to make for this process to be successful, but your health and happiness is worth it, and you won't be disappointed.
I will help raise your commitment by giving you an understanding of how and why you are in pain, and how the E-cises are going to assist you in getting out of pain and maintaining that status. Everyone wants to understand why they have their pain, and I bet you're no different, right? By getting you to acknowledge that asymmetry causes chronic pain, and helping me to identify some of the imbalances in your body, you will come to understand why you are so uncomfortable, and why that is simply not going to change, in fact will probably only continue to magnify, until your body gets more balanced. This will provide you with more incentive to commit to and follow the E-cise routines that will be given to you.
The third and most important factor in making the process successful is the effort that you put in to actually get down and do the work, every single day. I can't make you expend that effort. I can support, encourage, motivate and inspire you (unless you are opting for the Photo Therapy). Getting your goal really clear will assist with your motivation to do the work, and I will help you with that. Knowing that you will see me in a week's time for our next appointment will keep you accountable. But despite all that, to make this program successful it comes down to you - every day you need to get down and do the work. Nobody else is going to do that for you. You will change nothing if you do nothing.
Are you up for it? Are you ready to reduce your chronic pain and improve functional mobility for a happier and more fulfilling life? Give me a call on 0427 143 743 to find out when we can get started, or read on for more information.

Photo Therapy - a Great Opportunity
The Photo Therapy option has not been getting much of a rap here, but I would like you to give it some serious consideration, because it will allow some people to benefit from the process who would not normally be able to access it. It is very relevant to those people who cannot access me during my normal working hours. This provides those people who are asleep when I am at work. I'm thinking of people who live in a different time zone, or shift workers. If you are one of these people, you still have the option of doing the work. It may take a little longer, but it will still be effective in increasing your comfort, and it will cost you less money. So accessibility is no longer an issue - happy days!
If you are considering this option I would recommend that we find some way to make the first consultation a Digital Therapy session and from then on have Photo Therapy. The other factor I would like you to take into account when considering the Photo Therapy option is that, because I will not be able to see you performing the E-cises and won't have the opportunity to coach you in doing them correctly, it is even more important for you to follow the directions provided on the Egoscue Method App. Even though the E-cises are non-invasive and gentle, you are taking a greater risk of your pain not changing or increasing if you do the E-cises incorrectly.
Of course you are free to mix the delivery methods up. You might be in the middle of getting better and need to travel, or be unavailable for some sessions due to work or family commitments, so Photo Therapy may provide an opportunity for you to continue the process.
Many farmers rely on Bowen Therapy with me to recover from weeks on the tractor. All those hours sitting and twisting in the seat, going around and around or across and across bumpy paddocks takes a huge toll on the body. They don't have time to come all the way in to town for a treatment, especially knowing that all the good work will be undone again in the next few days, so they put up with the increasing stiffness, pain and discomfort until the work is done. Photo Therapy may well be of immense benefit to these people. The stiffness, pain and discomfort may easily be minimised by doing a sequence of Postural Alignment E-cises, focused at maintaining pelvic function and correct rotation in the body, for 10-15 minutes a day, and once a week emailing me some photos so that I can review the Menu.
Once you have achieved Pain Free Status and have got your life back, and you know how the system works and have faith that your body responds well to the E-cises, you may choose the Photo Therapy for your maintenance treatments as a cheaper option.

The Postural Alignment Appointment
The Postural Alignment Appointment consists of information gathering, exploration, education, goal setting, E-cise selection, coaching, feedback and review.
I choose the E-cises based upon the information you provide on your intake form, what you tell me, looking at your posture and potentially analysing your gait. You will complete a form (available at the top of this page and on the Home Page) which you will email to me, together with any relevant medical reports you may have. During the appointment, whether it's by Personal Therapy or Digital Therapy, I shall be taking photos of you standing from the front, back and sides, and may also take a video of you walking towards me, away from me and from side to side. If you are opting for Photo Therapy, you will be arranging your own photos and emailing them to me, as well as potentially arranging your own video and sending it to me on Messenger.
Once I have gathered all the information, we will then explore your posture (and maybe gait) together, so that you can see what I'm looking at and observing, and we can talk about why you might be experiencing the pain you are, why it's getting worse and how we can make it better. I prefer to conduct Digital Therapy appointments via Zoom because of the screen share function which allows me to show you so many things. You will then define a goal that you would like to reach in regards to your discomfort, and explore how that is going to make a difference in your life.
You will then run you through the suggested E-cise routine. Together we will work out what is too easy and too difficult and explore modifications and substitutions to come up with your personal E-cise Menu that is tailored specifically to help your body become more functional.
We will download the Egoscue Method App together. Your E-cise menu will be available to you there, and will also be sent to your email address.
Once you go home you are not alone. You can print out the email with a summary of the menu together with instructions, and you will have the Egoscue Method App to remind you of the routine and how to do the E-cises as well. You will be prompted to provide me with feedback on each of the E-cises around the second or third day. If anything needs tweaking I shall let you know via email. Please feel free to text or call if you have any other questions or concerns between then and when we catch up next.

Postural Alignment Services
There are four styles of appointments offered.
Personal Therapy
I will leave 2 hours for the first session of Personal Therapy, and 90 minutes for subsequent sessions, but we may not need that long. Appointments will include tailoring the E-cises to your body and coaching you through the E-cise Menu, as well as an option of some Bowen Therapy intervention (full treatment will be extra). An email with a summary of the Menu and instructions on the E-cises will be sent to you, and you will have access to the Egoscue Method App on which you will find your E-cise Menu, instructions and videos. Post appointment feedback is requested and the E-cise Menu will be reviewed if required between appointments.
Digital Therapy

Post appointment feedback is requested and the E-cise menu will be reviewed if required between appointments. The only difference to the Personal Therapy option is that this option is delivered online, preferably by a Zoom meeting so that you can see my screen.
I don't believe that either Personal Therapy or Digital Therapy is a better option over the other, although I have noticed that I get a better understanding of the situation and what is going to work when I can observe the home or work environment with Digital Therapy - an added benefit I didn't expect.
Photo Therapy
Communication for Photo Therapy is via email only. The client is responsible for arranging their own photos and videos and providing them to me by email (photos) and Messenger (video). Selection of the E-cises will be on the information provided only, and modifications and substitutions are not an option. There will be no coaching on the E-cises. An email with a summary of the Menu and instructions on the E-cises will be sent, and you will have access to the Egoscue Method App which gives you access to your E-cise Menu, instructions and videos. Post appointment feedback is requested but the e-cise menu will not be reviewed between appointments.
This option requires you to follow the instructions very carefully to get the best results. Of course if you do not follow instructions you will risk not improving your symptoms or, in rare circumstances, may make them worse. If you choose this option you will be asked to acknowledge that you consciously take that risk.
Ultimate Therapy
Combining a Bowen treatment with a Postural Alignment E-cise Menu is an exciting prospect - the Ultimate Therapy. The E-cises are gentle and non-invasive, so compliment the Bowen treatment perfectly. Support your body through the changes Bowen Therapy makes with the Postural Alignment E-cises and see what improvement can be achieved. I expect this would be unique to A Bowen Clinic ... and other journeys, but may be wrong. If anyone knows of someone else combining Egoscue's E-cises with Bowen Therapy please let me know as I'd really like to compare notes with them.
This option would be a 2 hour appointment, and would not be offered on the first Bowen or Postural Alignment treatment. We'll do a quick review, then take postural photos and a video if required. During your Bowen treatment I will create an E-cise Menu that we'll run through before you leave. An email with a summary of the Menu and instructions on the E-cises will be sent, and you will have access to the Egoscue Method App which gives you access to your E-cise Menu, instructions and video. The Missing Link in the Rehabilitation Process
I am so excited to be able to offer these Postural Alignment E-cises to people who would like to resume exercise, either at the gym or some other activity, but due to persistent re-injury are unable to do so. Many of my Bowen clients start Yoga or Pilates or back at the gym, only to re-injure themselves again because the instructors simply do not understand how little they need to start of doing. This happens to so many people finishing up with rehab therapists, over and over again, so they finally give up thinking they will never be able to do that activity ever again. I should know, I was one of them at the rip old age of 28.
I have been waiting for a service to be offered in Dubbo that caters for that phase of recovery between rehabilitation and resumption of normal physical active exercise. It hasn't come along, so now I've done something about it. The E-cises I now have in my arsenal can target the person who is in so much pain they can hardly move, or a part of their body is weakened, all the way through to the person who is looking for more strength and activity to prepare themselves for resuming Yoga, Pilates, gym workouts or sport. Together we can work to get you back to the sport or activity you enjoy.
