The Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund is a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to provide an ongoing source of funds for children with disabilities, to improve their quality of life. Tese are the kinds of children that Tom Bowen treated without charge throughout his 26 years of practice. The funds will be used to purchase electronic and mechanical aids for enhancing the children's mobility and ability to communicate. No funds will be returned to Bowen practitioners, who, in the tradition of Tom Bowe, treat such children gratis as a matter of course. Contributions are welcome from Bowen practitioners and members of the public who have experienced the benefits of Tom's work. To contribution you can place your contribution (either cash or a cheque payable to "The Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund" in the specially marked box in your Bowen Therapist's rooms. There is one in my rooms at 5/43 Macquarie Street, and I shall be emptying it on a regular basis and transfering the total to the Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund. Alternatively you could mail your cheque to The Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund, 36 Somerdale Avenue, Ocean Grove, VIC 3226, Australia. Over the last 12 months The Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund have purchased specially equipped wheelchairs for two young people with disabilities. Please help me to support this most worthy cause. One lady from Pennsylvania shared her experience of being treated with Bowen in the recent Bowen Hands Journal, and her story inspired me to share it with you. “The first time I wheeled my walker into your office, I didn’t know what to expect. Medically this has been a horrible year for me. Everything that could possibly be done to help me was being done. The day after a successful aorta valve replacement, I went into shock and my lungs, kidneys and bones were all failing me. An induced coma helped save my life, but my right arm was broken in the process of moving me and no one knew it. It went undetected until I was brought out of the coma. My whole body was weakened and infection after infection set in. Finally, after two months in hospital and two months in Concordia of South Hills for rehab, I was sent home to recoup. However, I was left to deal with EXTREME dizziness/vertigo and the pain in my degenerating hips, knees and groin. When we met, I was beyond hope and desperation. I can honestly tell you I was giving up. My niece told me about you and we felt it was worth a try. THANK GOD WE DID! Mary, the FOG HAS LIFTED from my head! The very first time you worked on my head I FELT THE FOG LIFT as soon as you touched that part of my skull. What is amazing is that I had been telling doctors about that area of my head FOR MONTHS and no one even looked at it … much less felt back there. The reaction on my fog, and dizziness, was IMMEDIATE. As we left you that first day, I was PRAYING this clarity in my eyes and head would last! IT WAS AMAZING AND WE ARE NOW AT WEEK THREE AND IT HASN’T COME BACK. My second visit was soothing and eased some of the pain in my spine and legs. While I was still weak, my energy level was improved and the SHARP EDGE of my pain had dulled to a livable point. HOWEVER, THE TWO BIGGEST IMPROVEMENTS CAME IN MY THIRD VISIT! I had severe leg surgery and toe amputations fifty years ago. Since then, I could not feel the front of my legs. Actually, the only thing I could feel in my legs was PAIN. On that third visit, you did something with the back of both legs that made me feel as if someone had just turned on the faucets and blood was going through my legs again. Since that treatment, my whole body feels better. My pain is almost totally gone and while I am still stiff when I get up, that horrible pain that would take my breath away is GONE! Mary, I’m sorry to write you such a long email but I am not good with the computer AND I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW WHAT BOWEN HAS DONE FOR ME. If you can figure out how to get it on a website or something – where people can read about what has happened to me, I would appreciate it. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO USE MY NAME ON IT AS WELL. I want people to know that this is real … I am a real person who has been suffering terribly and now I feel like life is returning to me after all. I don’t know if it works for everyone or not. I can only tell you what has happened to me BUT I WOULD LIKE OTHERS TO KNOW BECAUSE PERHAPS IT CAN HELP ONE OTHER PERSON TO AVOID WHAT I HAVE BEEN THROUGH. You must tell people that they need to keep an open mind AND while you are working on them, they must clear their minds and think about what they have to do next or their grocery list, etc. Just let you and Bowenwork Therapy do your magic!!! With gratitude that never ends, ANTOINETTE JUCHA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania" Many thanks to Antoinette and her Bowen Therapist, Mary Martorano, for sharing this with the world through Bowen Hands, the journal of The Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia. After the winter hibernation from my intermittent blogging, and a bit of a spring clean, I thought I would share this delightful story that I came across in a Bowen journal. An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, but the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house," the cracked pot said. The old woman smiled and said, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house." Each of us has our own unique flaw, but it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them. 29/5/2014 0 Comments Water WorksHydration is an important and integral part of life, and as such is an important and integral part of the Bowen treatment plan. Being properly hydrated allows our bodies to perform optimally in an enormous number of functions, including brain function, digestion, liver and kidney function, elimination, toxin elimination, muscle firing patterns and metabolism. We have all heard that our bodies are made up of 75% water. We have also all heard that if you're trying to stay properly hydrated, you're decision to drink water when you feel thirsty is too late. Considering these two points together we can deduce that our bodies are made up of 75% water if we are properly hydrated, and if we are not properly hydrated and not made up of 75% water then we are not functioning optimally. Maintaining good health is becoming difficult in our age of environmental and emotional stress. Ensuring we drink enough water is one of the easiest steps to take in maintaining or regaining good health. It is by no means the only step, but it is one of the easiest ways. How much water should we be drinking? We have all heard that we should be drinking 8 glasses of water a day. But how big is a glass of water? Professional advice seems to range from about 100ml (which people of my grandmother's generation use as a guide out of convenience) to 250ml. This varies from 800ml to 2L per day. Mr Bowen's guide for proper hydration to prepare for and support an effective Bowen treatment was 25ml/kg of body weight. This seems to be a proportion that is becoming recommended throughout the alternative health industry, and the one that I find the most effective base guide, depending on the temperature and the amount of coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, medication, drugs and other toxins consumed. Bowen works best on well hydrated tissue, and Mr Bowen recommended drinking 25ml/kg body weight, and more in heat and when consuming coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, medication and other toxins. The following table gives you a quick base guide on how much you should be drinking. 1.5 litres of water if you weigh 60kg 2 litres of water if you weigh 80kg 2.5 litres of water if you weigh 100kg 3 litres of water if you weigh 120kg An excuse used by many people as to why they do not drink an adequate amount of water is that it makes them pee a lot. When you begin to drink an adequate amount of water your body is able to start moving toxins out of storage for elimination in the urine. High toxicity of the urine triggers the body to eliminate the urine, so until your body gets rid of the toxins you will be needing to pee more often, not necessarily a high quantity. Know that this feeling will pass when the high load of toxins pass out of the body, and that this inconvenience won't last. The benefits of proper hydration include improved concentration and alertness, increased energy, better digestion, reduced constipation, improved eyesight, clear skin, good coordination and a general feeling of improved well-being. Bowen moves instigate waves in the connective tissues of the body. It is these waves that are responsible for the holistic and effective healing effects that Bowen Therapy has on the body. These waves in the connective are going to be stronger and more long lasting, and therefore more valuable to healing, if the tissue is well hydrated. The best thing you can do for yourself to get the most value from your Bowen treatment is to ensure you are well hydrated by the time you have a Bowen treatment, and for at least a week afterwards. Being dehydrated at and after your Bowen treatment does not mean that Bowen won't work for you, just that you won't get the most effective benefit from it. It's your choice. For more information on Bowen Therapy and how it works please go to www.bowentherapy.com.au, email Prue or call 0427143743. I'll be discussing more about the type of water we should be drinking in next week's blog. Cheers for now, Prue 19/3/2014 0 Comments Improving Core Strength Core Strength is the key to sustained energy, stamina, and injury free amazing performance. It seems that Core Strength is really misunderstood by most athletes and personal trainers. Once Core Strength is understood there is a simple exercise that can easily and effectively be added to your daily routine which will increase stamina, as long as there are no biomechanical issues present that will stand in the way. I attended a Sports Bowen workshop run by a lady who does Bowen on Olympic athletes. This was about fifteen months ago, and today I found myself sharing her wisdom about Core Strength with one of my clients, an avid cyclist and long distance runner. Now I'm sure there's a lot about Core Strength that I don't know, and I am certainly not an expert on it, but what this lady was saying made a lot of sense to me. I hope the following imparts her wisdom to a certain extent for your benefit. The message began with the idea that as our major muscle groups (I guess these are quads and hammies, biceps and triceps, as well as abs and external back muscles) use up the energy they have in storage, they then draw energy from the Core Muscles. The stronger these Core Muscles are, the more energy they can provide to our runners, cyclists, rowers, tennis players, weight lifters, etc, to provide the stamina and strength they need. Now I didn't know this, but as far as I can tell the sports and gym industry get it this far. She went on to explain that if the Core Muscles were not strong, and the energy capacity of the major muscle groups runs out, other "secondary" muscles try to take over, providing both energy and biomechanical strength, which of course is not as effective and doesn't last that long. As the limited energy of these "secondary" muscles runs out, we experience fatigue or high rates of injury or breakdown. I think most get this too. Gyms and personal trainers all over the world have been pushing various Core Strength Exercises, Core Fitness Routines and Core Muscle Training in an effort to increase their clients' Core Strength, Core Fitness and, ultimately, stamina. I personally have yet to hear of a routine that actually addresses the true Core Muscles, as defined in this Sports Bowen workshop. As far as I can tell, the common perception is that the (external) back muscles and the abdominal muscles are perceived as the Core Muscles. Some people believe that even the quads and hammies, biceps and triceps are Core Muscles, and exercises for these muscles are included in popular Core Muscle Strengthening Routines. Now I'm not suggesting for one minute that you disregard these muscles and discontinue your routine on strengthening these muscle groups. What I will suggest is that, in most instances, by doing these routines the athlete will not notice a vast improvement in stamina, and probably strength, until the true Core Muscles are strengthened. Here's the secret. The true Core Muscles are those that are found deepest in your body. They are the muscles that hold each of the vertebrae in your back together, at all different angles. They are the muscles that go from one vertebra to another, and as a whole they work synergistically together to allow your spine to flex, extend, rotate and bend one way and another. All the gym exercises that work on the abs and exterior back muscles, the quads and hammies, biceps and triceps, do work these true Core Muscles a bit, but do not focus on them, and so they are not getting really strong. Not strong enough to make a real difference to your performance. The exercise for strengthening the true Core Muscles is very easy to do, and doesn't take very long (especially when you're starting) but they are difficult to do properly. I could explain how to do it here, but it’s actually quite difficult to do properly, targeting the correct muscles you want to strengthen rather than other muscles that generally want to take over. So some coaching is required to engage the correct muscles. Once this is done, and a regular routine is established, you will probably find that your true Core Strength will increase noticeably. As you progress you will notice other deep muscle groups start engaging as the whole of the deep and true Core Muscle Group is activated and developed. Now I'm going to make myself vulnerable at this point, as my life coaches are encouraging me to do, and reveal to you that I do not do any exercise. None whatsoever. My (previously secret) philosophy is that if I don't have any muscles, then they won't get sore if I work them. And this works well when I go skiing and horse riding. I simply don't get sore ... amazingly ... thanks be to God. However, when I tried the exercise to strengthen the true Core Muscles, it was identified that my Core Muscles were dreadfully weak, and the lady suggested that I start with 5 reps, 3 times a day and work up from there. The really embarrassing thing was that she suggested that each contraction be held for 2 seconds. Hmmm, I was found out. Worst in the class. The dunce. But I followed her instructions to the letter, and for 7 weeks I did 5 reps of contractions 3 times a day, increasing the duration of contractions each day. They were miniscule increases in the beginning, but by the end of 7 weeks I could hold the contractions for 3 minutes! Now, because I never do any exercise, I really couldn't tell whether I had more strength or stamina. I also know that I have some biomechanical issues that may inhibit Core Strength to be relayed between muscle groups, so I wasn't a perfect scientific experiment. I was certainly feeling better after the 7 weeks, but I had also dramatically changed my diet during that time so cannot conclusively say what factors led to my increase in health and well-being. But the theories make sense, don't you think? If what she says resonates with you, and you'd like to know how to apply this easy and time effective True Core Muscle Strengthening Exercise properly to increase your athletic stamina, or simply to contribute to your feeling of well-being, please give me a call on 0427 143 743 for an appointment. I would be very interested in feedback on the effectiveness of these True Core Strengthening Exercises on either athletes or virtual couch potatoes (like me!). As mentioned on many occasions throughout this blog, the lady suggested that this exercise would increase Core Strength provided there was no biomechanical reason why the Core Muscle Strength would not be transferred to other muscles. As a Bowen Therapist, I have some understanding of these possible biomechanical blockages, and may assist you in clearing them to reach your potential. To make an appointment with me please email me, or phone 0427 143 743. For more information about Bowen Therapy please visit www.bowentherapydubbo.com.au. This week Bowen has helped with back spasms, thumb pain, lower back and quad pain, amongst other things. Back Spasms An active elderly lady came to see me suffering from muscle spasms in her back from her hips to her shoulder blades. She explained that she gets these episodes of muscle spasm maybe three times a year and they last about a week, and this has happened since she was 19 years old. She was very uncomfortable, even on muscle relaxants and strong pain relief, and quite distressed. It seemed that some movements of her head and neck triggered the spasms, amongst many other things. After the initial Bowen treatment, which allows the whole body to relax and re-balance, she got off the table pain free. When she tried to bring on the muscle spasms with movements that triggered it before, she was unable to. However her neck was a little restricted in some movements so I did some Bowen while she was standing, and she regained normal neck movement with no discomfort. She was particularly amazed that the pain behind her knee, which she had experienced since she was a child and hadn't mentioned to me before, had gone as well. Thumb Pain A keen gardener came in for a third visit with a very sore thumb. Three weeks beforehand the thumb had been a bit sore, along with his jaw, lower back, calves and feet, and he complained of having very low energy levels. The first treatment had resolved the lower back and energy issues and had improved the thumb pain, and he had felt so good that he went out and dug in the garden for four hours the day before the second Bowen treatment. That night the thumb had swollen up and begun aching again. By the time he came in to see me the next day it was throbbing, and he rated the pain level as 9/10. During the second treatment the client felt lots of tingling and burning in his arm and hand which settled before the end of the treatment, but his thumb was still very painful. It did improve during the week, and on presenting for his third Bowen session he rated the pain level at 4/10. As he left this treatment he rated the pain at 2/10. Lower Back and Quad Pain I didn't quite know what to do with a shop worker who had lower back pain and pain in his quads which worsened during the day to pins and needles, burning and numbness. He had been putting up with this for at least ten years, having consulted chiropractors who wouldn't treat him but referred him to doctors, and medical specialists who did not know the cause and told him there was nothing they could do. Obviously a nerve was involved, but the basic tests I performed to find where the restriction was located were all inconclusive. So I trusted in the Bowen process and treated this person to the overall body relaxation and re-balancing session. The result was quite astonishing - no lower back pain or quad pain at all after the treatment. He has phoned me since to tell me that the pain does come back when he stands still for a long time, but that just by moving his hips a bit he can make it go away. He also said that he has been sleeping through the night every night since, which was very rare before, and he thinks it has had a very positive effect on his depression. All good news. Just before Christmas I was presented with my Diploma in Bowen Therapy -Yay! Many thanks to David Winter and his class in Toowoomba for welcoming me to their assessment weekend and sharing their knowledge with me. I have now completed all the formal Bowen training with Border College of Natural Therapies and the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia. This training has included the Certificate IV in Bowen Therapy, Diploma of Bowen Therapy and the completion of the advanced course of Specialised Bowen Procedures. Now that I have my Diploma, many more private health funds will provide rebates to my clients. When you make an appointment, please ask if your health fund provides cover for Bowen. You will then need to check with your fund to ensure you have the extras cover to be able to claim successfully. To keep up accreditation with our industry associations, BAA and BTAA, we are required to continue our education with workshops on applying Bowen or supporting education. Over the next five years I am hoping to complete workshops that will increase my knowledge in Bowen for stroke victims, diabetics, sports injuries, shoulder injuries, and childbirth, babies and toddlers. My big plan, however, involves studying Bowen for horses (EMRT) and Small animals (CCMRT) with Ali Goward at Tairo, QLD. This will involve 2 years of study which includes many weekends a long way from home in Queensland, not to mention a lot of money. I am hoping to begin this year, but whether that actually happens remains to be seen. Working with horses and small animals will be so enriching, and will enhance the incredibly fulfilling work I already do with people. For more information about Bowen, or to make an appointment, check out my website, www.bowentherapydubbo.com.au, contact me by email or call on 0427 143 743. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers for now, Prue 13/2/2014 1 Comment Less is MoreIt often puzzles people how incredibly effective Bowen is in resolving issues and managing pain with very little bodywork. Caretakers of the technique, Ozzie and Elaine Rentsh, and their wonderful team of instructors continually remind us in our training of the philosophy "less is more". This can be seen in many facets of Bowen, from the amount of pressure the Bowen practitioner applies to the amount of Bowen treatments recommended.
Less is more for the amount of pressure the Bowen practitioner uses. Bowen is well known as a gentle therapy. The pressure we use is no more than you would use when rubbing your eye. Many of my new clients say “you can go harder if you like”, but Bowen doesn’t work that way. Bowen relies on the muscles being relaxed so that they can react in the correct way to the Bowen move. If the practitioner places too much pressure in the challenge and the move, the body would tense up to protect itself from harm, and when this occurs the effect of the Bowen move is reduced. Less is more for the number of issues addressed by the Bowen practitioner. Bowen seems more effective if the body has only one job to heal at a time. The first treatment has one objective, and that is to relax the body and set it up for healing. This treatment addresses the lower back, the legs, the upper back, the mid back and the neck. This should be the longest and biggest treatment, but only has one objective – to relax the body. It is amazing the results this has on its own, and often we don’t see the client again because their problem vanishes even though we haven’t actually addressed it. If the issue has not resolved, subsequent treatments are then able to focus on the most important issue. Once that issue clears, the next issue may be addressed. Addressing more than one issue at a time will reduce the effectiveness of the treatment and therefore you will not get the desired result. Less is more for the number of moves the Bowen practitioner makes. Once the body is prepared for healing by the first relaxation treatment, the Bowen practitioner will try to address the problem with as few moves as possible. Some procedures have no prerequisites, and some procedures have many prerequisites. In general though, the less done the better the outcome. Keeping it simple seems to be the key. Less is more for or the stimulation during the treatment session. For your body to integrate the effect of the Bowen treatment it needs to have an environment where stimulation is minimised as much as possible. There will be no nice relaxing music for you to listen to you as this will distract your body from doing the work it needs to do. I will not communicate with you except to give you some directions and unless you ask me to do something for your comfort or ask a question relating to the session. Less is more for the amount of time the Bowen practitioner stays in the room. Bowen’s characteristic “waits” make it so different from other therapies. After a few moves the Bowen practitioner actually leaves the room for two minutes or more. Sometimes they will even come back in to check you and then leave for some more time without doing anything. Bowen practitioners around the world agree that the “waits” are the most important part of a Bowen treatment. During this time the Bowen move is integrated and processed by the body. The Bowen practitioner leaves the room so that they do not get involved nor inhibit this process. It is important that the client’s body does this by itself, so that it learns to heal itself without reliance on other stimuli or energy. Sometimes the client will feel sensations within their body during a “wait”. It is important to recognise that whilst ever this is occurring the body is still processing. If the practitioner continues with more Bowen moves the original processing will be interrupted and the effect will not be as great. It is very important that you let me know if there are still things going on in your body when I come back in the room after a "wait" so that I don’t go ahead and do more. Less is more for the amount of treatments you receive. Whilst I always explain that the first session will be relaxing your body and not necessarily addressing the issue, and I encourage clients to give Bowen three treatments a week apart to see if it will make a difference, there is no need to keep coming back for subsequent treatments if the issue is no longer present. Sometimes problems are so deep it might take months to resolve. These people have faith that Bowen is working because they have noticed a small improvement (even if it’s just sleeping better) over the first few treatments, often where other therapies have had no impact at all. Other times what seems like a major issue is not so deep and is resolved after just one session. It is these people who often discount the effect of Bowen, putting their recovery down as a coincidence. Unfortunately often these issues recur and when they do the client doesn’t seek Bowen again because they don’t recognise it has helped. If these people would return for more Bowen they might find that it would resolve the issue once again, more sustainably the next time, and the issue may not recur for a longer period, if at all. The first three weeks of Ruby's life were spent sleeping, consuming and eliminating, just as a baby should. Then reflux began and life in the household turned upside down. Ruby screamed most of the time, slept fitfully for a total of about four hours a day, became a bright red colour all over, threw up a lot and writhed around in pain. Luckily some friends new the effects of Baby Bowen, and Ruby's mum brought her in to see me. As Ruby squirmed in her mother's arms I did 4 tiny Bowen moves on her back. About 10 seconds later she stopped crying, took a deep breath and went to sleep. A few minutes later Ruby woke and began squirming in pain again. After the 3 tiny Bowen moves on her front she stopped squirming, stretched out, relaxed and went back to sleep. A few minutes later we noticed that Ruby's red blotchy complexion had changed and she was now the beautiful peaches and cream complexion that she was meant to be. Ruby slept for an hour and a half while her mum and I talked, and was still asleep as she was being put in the car to head home. I haven't heard from them again, so imagine the household is back to normal. |
AuthorHi, I'm Prue Duffy, a Bowen Therapist and Equine Muscle Release Therapist in regional NSW, Australia, and the results most of my clients get is truly amazing.. I've been doing Bowen since 2007, and opened a practice in Dubbo in 2012.
