Bowen Therapy for Babies and Children

Supporting balance, comfort and wellbeing through all stages of womanhood.

Honouring the body's wisdom

Women’s bodies are in constant dialogue with change - monthly rhythms, pregnancy, birth, perimenopause, menopause and all the transitions between.  Bowen Therapy offers a gentle way to support that process by helping the body find balance and ease before addressing specific concerns.

I’ve been privileged to study advanced Bowen hormonal balancing techniques developed by Terry Rose and taught by Ron Phelan.  That training deepened my understanding of how Bowen Therapy may support women through every stage of life not by forcing change, but by helping the body remember how to regulate itself.

Menstrual pain, endometriosis, PTSD and PMDD

For many women, the menstrual cycle can bring discomfort that affects not just the body, but mood, sleep and energy.
Around periods, mood changes can colour relationships and dampen the joy of life. The dull to severe pelvic ache can be heavy and incessant, the cramping excruciating or even debilitating, and heavy bleeding can mean you can’t go far from the bathroom. For some, those few days a month feel like lost time.

PTSD is linked with hormonal imbalance.  It’s not just in your head, and it’s not simply stress.  And for those whose PTSD has escalated to the horrors of PMDD - for yourselves and your loved ones - please know you haven’t “gone mad.”  These intense mood and energy swings are hormone-related, and they deserve to be understood and addressed, not dismissed.
Women living with endometriosis often describe feeling as though their body is stuck in a loop of pain.  The tissues react, hormones surge, and the nervous system stays on high alert.  It can feel relentless, month after month.
And to those living with PCOS, my heart goes out to you as well.   The good news is that there’s often hope for easing symptoms, and in some cases, noticeable improvement over time.
Through Bowen Therapy, I work with the body’s communication systems - the nerves and hormonal pathways that influence the reproductive organs and stress responses.  Most women I treat notice changes within six weeks and significant improvements within three months.  After the initial body balancing treatment, sessions are about 45 minutes and usually fortnightly, except for endometriosis, where the plan is weekly for a month, fortnightly for a month, and then monthly for three months.
Gentle, consistent work gives the body a chance to reset its rhythm — and that can change everything.

Fertility and conception

Trying to conceive can be one of the most emotional journeys a woman ever faces.  Each month carries its own hope, worry and heartbreak, and it’s easy to lose confidence in your body’s ability to do what it’s meant to.  Bowen Therapy offers a gentle, grounded way to help the body remember how to work in harmony again.  It doesn’t try to force a result.  Instead, it supports the body’s natural communication between the nervous system, endocrine system and reproductive organs so the right conditions for conception may return.
For many women, this approach has been enough on its own.  Some come to Bowen Therapy after being told their chances were slim or impossible, only to find that their body responds differently once it’s back in balance.  Others have used it to complement medical fertility programs, finding that it helps them stay calm, sleep better and recover more easily from the physical and emotional strain of those treatments.
Sessions are usually timed around key phases of the menstrual cycle, using the same sequence of moves each time to reinforce the body’s rhythm until it responds or goals change.  When appropriate, treating the partner as well can further support the process.  Conception is, after all, a shared journey.
When the body feels safe, balanced and connected, nature often steps in. Sometimes the most powerful change begins with the gentlest touch.

Pregnancy support

Pregnancy is one of the most remarkable and demanding things a body can do. As posture shifts and ligaments soften, even the simplest movements can suddenly feel awkward or painful.  It’s common for women to experience aching hips, lower back or abdominal discomfort, or that feeling of being “pulled out of shape.”
Bowen Therapy offers a gentle and safe way to ease the strain so your body can adapt more comfortably as your baby grows.
I often see women who arrive barely able to roll over in bed or get in and out of the car, and walk out looking like their body just remembered how to move again.  The treatment is calm and restorative, designed to relieve pressure on joints and soft tissue without disturbing the baby.  It may also help with pelvic balance, circulation, breathing ease and overall relaxation.  It's the kind of relief that makes everyday living feel doable again.

For simple pregnancy aches or twinges, I’m always happy to offer a quick treatment to bring comfort and freedom of movement, often free of charge when it’s just a minor adjustment.  When discomfort is more complex, or when a woman wants ongoing support throughout pregnancy, we can put a plan in place to keep her body balanced and comfortable right up to delivery.
It’s amazing what happens when the body stops fighting against itself.  Comfort returns, confidence grows and everything just feels a little easier.

Preparation for childbirth

As the final weeks of pregnancy draw closer, most women notice their body shifting again.  Joints loosen, balance changes, and sleep often becomes restless.  This is the body’s natural preparation for birth, but when tension or imbalance is present, it can make the process more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

Bowen Therapy offers a gentle, practical way to help your body feel ready for labour.  The aim isn’t to induce anything. t’s to encourage optimal alignment and communication through the pelvis, spine and nervous system so the body can do what it already knows how to do.
From around 28 weeks, a series of fortnightly and later weekly sessions can help maintain symmetry, keep muscles soft and responsive, and support your body’s coordination for birth.

Women often say they feel lighter, calmer and more connected with their baby, and some describe their labour as smoother or easier than they expected.  Most let me know that their labour was much more calm and peaceful than those they have experienced before.

These sessions also provide space to breathe, slow down and tune in.  Many mothers say it’s the only time they truly stop and let their body rest before the big day.

When the body feels balanced and confident, birth often follows that lead with more ease, less struggle and a quiet sense of readiness.

Recovery from childbirth

After birth, a woman’s body has an incredible amount of work to do.  Tissues are healing, organs are repositioning and a whole new rhythm is emerging around feeding, sleep and recovery.  It’s a time of deep transition, both physically and emotionally, and it’s easy for your own wellbeing to fall to the bottom of the list.

Bowen Therapy offers a calm and nurturing way to help your body realign after childbirth.  The treatment may support pelvic balance, ease back, hip or abdominal strain, and help restore coordination through the spine and pelvis, which is especially important if birth was long, assisted, or via caesarean.  For some women, sessions also help reduce intermittent incontinence, improve comfort when sitting or walking, gently assist the re-connection of separated abdominal muscles, and support more efficient milk flow.

These sessions are gentle, restorative and timed to suit your energy levels and feeding schedule.  Many mothers describe feeling “put back together” - lighter, more balanced and more at home in their body again.

After all the effort of bringing new life into the world, your body deserves the same care you’ve given to everyone else.  A little support here can make the next chapter so much easier.

Perimenopause and menopause

Perimenopause and menopause can feel like your body has changed the rules without telling you.  For some women, it’s a mild inconvenience.  For others, it’s an exhausting mix of physical and emotional upheaval that can stretch on for years.
There might be heavy or painful periods one month and none the next, hot flushes that arrive out of nowhere, broken sleep, aching joints, anxiety, low mood, or that hollow feeling of being unloved or unlovable.  Libido often disappears just when life finally feels calmer, and even intimacy can become uncomfortable or painful.  It’s a miserable time indeed.
Bowen Therapy offers a gentle and effective way to help the body settle as hormones shift. By addressing the nerves and hormonal pathways involved in regulation, the body may find a steadier rhythm again.  Many women notice that their hot flushes ease, sleep improves, moods stabilise and the body begins to feel like their own once more.  Sessions are quiet, nurturing and deeply restorative.  It's a chance to rest, recalibrate and breathe again while your system finds its new normal.
This is meant to be a new season of life, not a battle with your own body.  Gentle, regular Bowen treatments can help you step into it with calm, comfort and confidence.

Incontinence - after childbirth and in later life

Few things affect confidence quite like incontinence.  Whether it’s a light leak when you cough or laugh, or a constant need to stay near a bathroom, it can make everyday life frustrating and isolating.  For many women, it’s also something they’ve been told to simply “put up with” when, in reality, the body often just needs the right cues to recover its coordination.
After childbirth, incontinence usually comes from the bladder being shifted downward during delivery and not fully returning to its natural position.  Bowen Therapy can help by encouraging the surrounding structures to realign, restoring balance through the pelvis, sacrum and lower back so the bladder can function normally again.  It’s gentle work that helps everything find its rightful place.
With age, the causes are different.  Here, incontinence tends to relate more to reduced pelvic-floor tone, stiffness through the lower back, sacrum or sacro-iliac joints, or a loss of coordination between breathing, pelvic motion and the nervous system.  Bowen Therapy may help restore that synchrony, allowing the body’s natural rhythms of movement and muscle activation to return and with it, better control and confidence.
Each woman’s situation is unique, but in most cases the improvements build steadily, bringing both comfort and peace of mind.  Regaining control isn’t just physical.  It’s about feeling like yourself again, free to move through life without worry or hesitation.

Emotional overlay and integration

Hormones don’t just affect the body.  They colour how we feel, think and connect with others.  When the nervous system is under strain, everything can feel magnified: pain, fatigue, irritation, sadness, even self-doubt.  As balance returns, it’s often the emotional changes that women notice first - a sense of calm, clarity, and the feeling that they’re finally back in their own skin.
Bowen Therapy doesn’t separate body from mind.  Every treatment honours the whole person - physical, emotional, and energetic - so the body can re-establish harmony on all levels.  It’s gentle work with powerful ripple effects.  Less struggle, more steadiness, and a quiet confidence that life is moving in the right direction again.
